Tropical Rainfall-surface Temperature Relations Using Trmm Precipitation Data

چکیده
In this study, nine-years (1998-2006) of monthly precipitation data from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) are used to examine the relations between tropical rainfall and surface temperature. A technique is developed to adjust the PR monthly rainfall data in the Tropics (whole ocean and whole land) to account for the effect of the TRMM orbit boost from 350 km to 402 km in August 2001. The post-boost PR rainfall is adjusted by adding 6.5%, 6.0%, and 1.0% to the monthly PR rainfall data over the ocean at estimated surface, near surface, and 2km level, respectively. No adjustment is made for data over land or above the 4 km level. Overall, it is found that the PR-based precipitation-temperature slopes do not confirm slopes based on passive microwave observations. This may be result of PR retrieval error, or inherent passive/active retrieval differences. Further research is needed to advance the use of TRMM data in this regard.

Spatial rainfall is a key input to Distributed Hydrological Models, which is the most important limitation for the accuracy of hydrological models. Model performance and uncertainty could increase when rain gauge is sparse. Satellite-based precipitation products would be an alternative to ground-based rainfall estimates in present and 5 the foreseeable future, however, it is necessary to evalua...

[1] This paper focuses on the relation between local sea surface temperature (SST) and convective precipitation fraction and stratiform rainfall area from radar observations of precipitation, using data from the Kwajalein atoll ground-based radar as well as the precipitation radar on board the TRMM satellite. We find that the fraction of convective precipitation increases with SST at a rate of ...

متن کاملAssessment of Effective Seasonal Downscaling of TRMM Precipitation Data in Peninsular Malaysia
Precise spatio-temporal measurements of rainfall during seasonal monsoons are critical for accurate hydrologic analyses in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The use of satellite precipitation data is technologically sound but requires downscaling to minimize inherent uncertainties. The uncertainties at a local climate regime that are essential to be resolved are rarely reported; consequen...
